Traceability: A Hydrological Study of Xizhi explores the complex relationship between Xizhi and water through collaborative learning events, water investigations, and artistic translations. Initiated by ZONE SOUND CREATIVE in collaboration with the local team ‘Rexizhi,’ this project involved a comprehensive study along the Keelung River. The study examined water-related facilities such as pumping stations, ecological trails, ditches, and flood storage areas, which are critical in managing the area’s frequent flooding. Community residents were invited to co-observe and document local narratives, particularly their experiences with past floods and evolving water management strategies. These activities not only gathered rich audio materials and environmental data but also captured the hydrological characteristics of Xizhi through various recording and sensing techniques.
The project integrates research, observations, and creative work through interactive soundscapes, video, and installation to investigate how Xizhi’s flood history has shaped the landscape and the community’s relationship with water. It showcases the journey from the origins of hydrological systems to the urban environment, reconstructing the dynamic changes in local hydrology and reflecting the ongoing search for balance between nature and urban life.
Co-Learning Workshops
This project featured co-learning workshops on Xizhi’s waterfront soundscapes. A key highlight was a hydrophone-making workshop with the local historical team Rexizhi, where participants built contact microphones, learned to solder, and applied waterproof coatings. After constructing their devices, they tested them and shared their experiences living in Xizhi and their ties to water. The workshops included soundscape explorations along the riverside, utilizing self-made hydrophones and recording devices like 3D, electromagnetic, and binaural microphones. Participants followed a mapped route, recording environmental sounds closer to the river’s source while discovering lesser-known local landmarks, including flood-damaged historic homes and tiled drainage pathways. ZONE SOUND team guided participants in documenting soundscapes alongside the Keelung river, at walkways, riverbanks, and markets, capturing the subtle sounds of the local environment.
Flood-Mud Recreation
As part of the Traceability Project, we collaborated with ceramic artist Shih Mao-Chih, known for exploring materials and glazes, to create The Smoking House: Xizhi Flood Soil + Humidifier Workshop. Shih transformed a repurposed school building into a pottery studio and used flood soil from Xizhi’s history as a key material, turning past flood events into a medium for artistic expression.
During the workshop, participants experimented with different formulas of flood mud recipes prepared by Shih. Using creativity and imagination, they combined the unique characteristics of flood soil with humidifier structures to craft portable, water-emitting houses. These creations symbolized the fusion of memory and materiality, reflecting the aesthetic possibilities of transforming the challenges of Xizhi’s flood history into innovative artistic forms.
Water Node Investigations
ZONE SOUND CREATIVE partnered with Rexizhi to investigate Xizhi’s hydrological systems. Flood prevention measures, including pumping stations on riverbanks, flood retention basins in schools, and eco-friendly pathways, are now embedded in daily life. The team focused on often-overlooked hydrological nodes, utilizing various investigative methods to build on earlier workshops. We tracked hydrological routes and used different recording techniques and digital technologies for prototype installations. On-site visits aimed to deepen personal experiences, enhancing the audience’s connection to the works and environment.
One key exploration site was the Yuanshanzi Diversion Channel, a critical infrastructure for managing Taipei’s flooding. The channel, a 2,483.5-meter-long tunnel with a 12-meter diameter, can divert up to 1,310 cubic meters of water per second into the northeastern coast of Taiwan, mitigating most flooding risks from the Keelung River. Despite its scale, nearby areas have faced severe flooding during recent extreme weather. This underscores the challenges of climate change and questions the resilience of current infrastructure. The project aims to discover new ways communities can coexist with water and adapt to changes by examining flood management systems and their interactions with local environments.
