Rescaling the World

The 2023 Annual Meeting of the Taiwan Science, Technology, and Society Association (Taiwan STS Association) is themed “Rescaling the World.” It invites researchers from diverse fields to gather at Taiwan’s Contemporary Culture Lab (C-Lab) to discuss the pivotal concept of “scale.” Whether in daily life, governmental policies, capitalist expansion, engineering designs, or humanities and social sciences, scale is ever-present. Yet, what is scale? What are its epistemological and ontological foundations? What does it mean in the context of the past, present, and future?

Science and Technology Studies (STS) in Taiwan has already established itself as a noteworthy academic branch. For the first time, this year’s annual meeting unites the art and STS communities to collaboratively “open the black and white boxes.” The event has drawn the participation of over 350 scholars from domestic and international institutions, including renowned experts from Harvard and MIT. Co-hosted by Zone Sound Creative and the Taiwan STS Association, this grand event combines academic discussions, art exhibitions, and public participation, providing a platform where art and technology researchers can jointly explore the multi-faceted concept of “scale.”

In an era of rapid digitization and globalization, existing boundaries and standards are constantly being challenged. The term “scale” no longer refers solely to the physical but is emblematic of the intersection of temporal, informational, perceptual, and cultural realms. Responding to the Taiwan STS Annual Meeting theme, “Rescaling the World,” the exhibition bridges the realms of technology, society, and contemporary art, featuring works by artists who have been affiliated with the MIT Media Lab and ACT, along with contributions from Taiwanese artists, offering multifaceted interpretations of the notion of scale.

For example, Rasa Smite and Raitis Smits, from Latvia’s RIXC Center for New Media Culture, harness technological tools to delve into the intricacies of “field radio” and human perception. Marisa Jahn presents an intricate blend of science, myth, and politics, urging a reevaluation of our relationship with natural resources and underscoring our interconnectedness. Aarti Sunder critically engages with the modern labor market, examining the profound influence of technology on perception and cognition. Nicole L’Huillier investigates the potential of sound seeds as a resistance tool through symbolic rituals. Maggie Coblentz directs her artistic lens towards human survival and dependence in the cosmos, conjuring up thought-provoking prototypes of space food. Taiwanese artist CHEN Chao-Tung pushes boundaries in our conventional understanding of physical space. Meanwhile, LAI Yen-Hsun masterfully transforms conceptual ideas into tangible art forms with an eye for abstraction, revealing the hidden structures that permeate everyday lives.

Complementing the exhibition, Marisa Jahn’s workshop explores the intricate roles of devils in technology, society, and psychology. Similarly, HSU Rae and Nancy Valladares offer insights into symbiotic relationships, bridging microscopic views with vast permafrost explorations. These events resonate with many presentations at the STS Annual Meeting, where discussions of technology and societal issues often intersect with performance and theatrical narratives.

Positioned at the intersection of art, technology, and social consciousness, this exhibition aims to foster meaningful dialogue between the public, scholars, and artists. It offers new vantage points for thought and feeling, expanding our comprehension and interpretation of the world. Showcased artworks highlight transitions in scale, from the microscopic to the macroscopic, crossing natural, sociopolitical, and technological dimensions and extending to the vast spaces between Earth and the cosmos. This diverse artistic practice reminds us of the necessity to reflect and adapt as we rescale the world.
